MEXT (Japanese Government Scholarship) is highly competitive but excellent for Nigerians. Strategy:

Application requires:
1. Research proposal (4-8 pages) — most important document
2. Field of Study and Research Plan (1-2 pages)
3. Application form
4. References from 2 academic advisors
5. Japanese language proficiency (JLPT N3+ helpful but not required)

Research proposal structure:

1. Title and abstract (200 words)
2. Background and motivation (400 words): Specific research question + why Japan
3. Methodology (600 words): Specific methods you’ll use
4. Expected outcomes (300 words): What you’ll produce
5. Timeline (200 words): Year-by-year plan
6. Why Japan (200 words): Specific Japanese research traditions or institutions
7. Career plan (200 words): 5-year post-MEXT trajectory

Example opener: "I propose to investigate the application of Japanese earthquake-resistant building design principles to Nigerian urban housing infrastructure. As a 2024 graduate of the University of Lagos with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering and a year of research at Lagos State Building Code Committee, I bring specific expertise to this question..."
