Research Title: Catalytic Conversion of African Bio-Waste to High-Value Pharmaceutical Precursors

Research Question: Can African agricultural waste streams (cassava peels, palm kernel cake, cocoa pod husk) be catalytically converted into pharmaceutical intermediates using earth-abundant metal catalysts?

Background: Nigeria produces 60 million tonnes of cassava annually, generating 12 million tonnes of peel waste — 95% burned or composted. Each peel contains 40-60% cellulose, 15-25% hemicellulose. The current pharmaceutical supply chain in Nigeria depends on imports from India and China.

My preparation: At OAU (B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry, First Class), I demonstrated that cassava peel-derived cellulose could be catalytically converted to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using a chromium-iron bimetallic catalyst at 78°C. We achieved 67% conversion efficiency.

Proposed research at Stanford: Direction 1: Catalyst optimization through DFT calculations. Direction 2: Scale-up to industrial waste streams. Direction 3: Mapping of African feedstock chemistry to catalyst selection.

Why Stanford: Professor Robert Waymouth’s group has computational methods (recent paper on ML for catalyst discovery, ACS Catalysis 2024). Stanford GCEP provides resources for scale-up. Stanford Africa Initiative funds field research.

Methodology: Years 1-2: coursework + DFT studies. Year 3: wet-lab development. Year 4: pilot plant collaboration (Dangote Sugar). Year 5: thesis.

Broader Impact: Cassava peel that has zero economic value becomes feedstock for pharmaceutical precursors. Drug supply chains less vulnerable to Naira devaluation.
