JUPEBPhysicsElectrostatics and Capacitors

(a) Define the capacitance of a capacitor and state its SI unit. (2 marks) (b) A capacitor stores a charge of $20\ \mu$C when the potential difference across it is $5$ V. Calculate (i) its capacitance and (ii) the energy stored. (5 marks) (c) Two capacitors of $2\ \mu$F and $4\ \mu$F are connected (i) in series and (ii) in parallel. Find the combined capacitance in each case. (4 marks) (d) A parallel-plate capacitor has plates of area $0.01$ m$^2$ separated by $1$ mm of air. Calculate its capacitance. (Take $\varepsilon_0 = 8.85 \times 10^{-12}$ F m$^{-1}$.) (4 marks)
