A $4\ \Omega$ resistor is connected in series with a parallel combination of $6\ \Omega$ and $3\ \Omega$ resistors, and the whole arrangement is connected across a $12$ V supply of negligible internal resistance. Find the potential difference across the parallel combination.

A$8$ V
B$2$ V
C$4$ VCORRECT
D$12$ V

Why the answer is C, and why the others tempt you.
The parallel pair gives $2\ \Omega$, so the total resistance is $4 + 2 = 6\ \Omega$ and the current is $\dfrac{12}{6} = 2$ A. The p.d. across the parallel combination is $2 \times 2 = 4$ V; the remaining 8 V is across the $4\ \Omega$ resistor.
