Why the answer is C, and why the others tempt you.
Write $y = (\tan x)^2$ and apply the chain rule: $\dfrac{dy}{dx} = 2\tan x \cdot \dfrac{d}{dx}(\tan x) = 2\tan x \sec^2 x$. Treating $\tan x$ like $x$ gives $2\tan x$, and differentiating only the inner function gives $2\sec^2 x$.
