QUESTION 1 Adekunle & Sons Nigeria Limited, a trading company based in Lagos, extracted a trial balance as at 31 March 2024 which failed to agree. The difference of N47,600 (debit excess) was posted to a suspense account pending investigation. Subsequent review by the chief accountant revealed the following errors: (i) A sales invoice of N84,000 issued to Bello Traders had been correctly entered in the sales day book but posted to Bello Traders' account as N48,000. (ii) The purchase of office equipment costing N120,000 had been debited to the purchases account in error. (iii) A credit note of N15,600 received from Dangote Supplies had been completely omitted from the books. (iv) The total of the returns inward day book of N32,400 had been posted to the returns inward account as N23,400. (v) Discount allowed of N8,800 had been debited to both the discount allowed account and the individual debtor's account. (vi) A payment of N12,000 for rent had been debited to the landlord's personal account instead of the rent account. Required: (a) Identify which of the errors above would cause the trial balance to disagree, stating the correcting entry required for each such error. (8 marks) (b) Prepare the suspense account, showing clearly the opening balance and all correcting entries. (6 marks) (c) State FOUR types of errors that will NOT cause a trial balance to disagree and give ONE example of each from accounting practice in Nigeria. (6 marks) Total: 20 marks
