A Muslim man dies leaving an estate worth ₦480,000. He is survived by only his mother and his wife and has no children or father. What is the mother's share of the estate?

When a man dies with no children and no father, the wife receives one-quarter (₦480,000 ÷ 4 = ₦120,000). The mother's share in the absence of children and multiple siblings is one-third of the REMAINING estate after the wife's share: remaining = ₦480,000 − ₦120,000 = ₦360,000; one-third of ₦360,000 = ₦120,000. However, according to the majority view (Qur'an 4:11), when there are no children the mother gets one-third of the whole estate = ₦160,000, and the wife gets one-quarter = ₦120,000, with the residue going to the nearest male agnate. The mother's share is therefore ₦160,000.
