Qiyas is the process of analogical reasoning whereby jurists extend a ruling from an existing case in the Qur'an or Sunnah to a new case that shares the same effective cause (illah). For example, the prohibition of khamr (wine) is extended by Qiyas to all intoxicants. It is the fourth source of Islamic Law, not to be confused with Ijma' which is scholarly consensus.
