After the Battle of Yamama (633 CE) against the false prophet Musaylimah, a significant number of huffaz (memorisers of the Qur'an) were killed. Umar ibn al-Khattab, alarmed by this loss, urged Abu Bakr to commission a written compilation to preserve the Qur'an. Abu Bakr appointed Zayd ibn Thabit to lead this task, resulting in the first compiled manuscript.
