The Kharijites originally supported Ali but broke away after he agreed to human arbitration (tahkim) following the Battle of Siffin, declaring 'La hukma illa lillah' (Judgment belongs to Allah alone). They considered Ali's acceptance of arbitration a grave sin that invalidated his caliphate. It was a Kharijite, Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam, who later assassinated Ali in 661 CE.
