An error of original entry occurs when the wrong amount is entered in the books of original entry, causing both the debit and credit entries to be posted with the same incorrect figure. This error does not affect the agreement of the trial balance because both sides are equally wrong. It is distinct from an error of omission, where a transaction is completely left out.
