The myelin sheath is a fatty insulating layer that surrounds the axon of certain neurones. It causes impulses to jump between the nodes of Ranvier (saltatory conduction), which significantly increases the speed of nerve impulse transmission. It does not generate impulses, produce neurotransmitters, or connect dendrites to the cell body.
