Lamarck proposed that characteristics acquired by an organism during its lifetime could be passed on to offspring. This idea was disproved when experiments, including those by Weismann who cut the tails of mice over many generations and observed no change in offspring, showed that acquired characteristics are not heritable. Modern genetics confirms that only changes in the genetic material (DNA) of germ cells can be inherited.
