Meiosis I is the reductional division: homologous chromosome pairs separate, so each daughter cell receives 23 chromosomes (each still consisting of two sister chromatids). Meiosis II is the equational division: sister chromatids separate, but the chromosome number per cell remains 23. Therefore, after meiosis I each cell has 46 chromatids arranged as 23 chromosomes, and after meiosis II each of the four cells has 23 chromosomes.
