After ovulation, the ruptured Graafian follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone (and some oestrogen) to maintain the thickened endometrium (uterine lining) in preparation for implantation. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates, progesterone levels fall, and menstruation begins. The placenta, not the corpus luteum, sustains pregnancy long-term.
