When iron reacts with excess chlorine gas at high temperature, iron(III) chloride (FeCl₃) is produced because chlorine is a strong oxidising agent that oxidises iron to its higher oxidation state of +3. The reaction is: 2Fe + 3Cl₂ → 2FeCl₃. Iron(II) chloride would form if chlorine were limited or a milder oxidant were used.
