a) Define the following terms as used in circular motion: i) Angular velocity (1 mark) ii) Centripetal acceleration (1 mark) b) Derive an expression for the centripetal force acting on a body of mass m moving with linear speed v in a circle of radius r. (3 marks) c) A stone of mass 0.5 kg is tied to one end of a string of length 0.8 m and whirled in a horizontal circle at a constant speed of 4 m/s. i) Calculate the angular velocity of the stone. (2 marks) ii) Calculate the centripetal force acting on the stone. (2 marks) iii) If the string breaks when the tension exceeds 20 N, determine the maximum speed at which the stone can be whirled without breaking the string. (3 marks) d) State one practical application of circular motion in everyday life. (1 mark)
