Why the answer is B, and why the others tempt you.
When two waves of equal frequency and amplitude travel in opposite directions through the same medium, they superpose to form a stationary (standing) wave characterised by fixed nodes and antinodes. The resultant wave does not transfer energy along the medium. Complete destructive interference at all points would require the waves to always be exactly out of phase everywhere, which is not the general case.
