JAMB Subject Combinations for Medicine in Nigeria (2026)
Exact JAMB and WAEC subject combinations needed to study Medicine and Surgery in Nigeria, plus cut-off marks for top universities.
The required JAMB subjects for Medicine
To study Medicine and Surgery (MBBS / MBChB) in any Nigerian university, JAMB requires these four subjects:
- Use of English (compulsory)
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
This combination is non-negotiable. You cannot substitute Physics with Mathematics or Geography. Some students try to get around this and find their JAMB scores rejected at admission.
WAEC/NECO requirement
You need at least 5 credits including English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics — at one sitting. Schools like UNILAG and UI strictly require all in one sitting; some schools accept two sittings.
JAMB cut-off marks for Medicine (typical)
- UNILAG, UI, OAU, UNN: 280+ (effective cut-off; official is often 200) - ABU, UDUS: 250+ - State universities: 240+ - Private universities (Covenant, Babcock, Bowen): 200+ but high tuition
Post-UTME matters more than you think
A 320 in JAMB without a strong post-UTME score still won't get you Medicine at UNILAG. Universities use aggregate scoring — typically 50% JAMB and 50% post-UTME. Plan for both.
The realistic timeline
JAMB Medicine candidates need to start serious prep 9–12 months before the exam. The Biology + Chemistry + Physics load is heavy. Most candidates who score 280+ in Medicine subjects practice at least 3,000 questions before JAMB day.
